Language Courses

ALCC is pleased to be able to offer a full range of programs to meet your English language training needs. We offer classes that help you to prepare for study at a university, college or secondary school. There are also programs to improve your general English language skills or your language skills for the business world. Choose from one of the many programs below.

General ESL Program

Description

Beginner students will start in the General English core course. The General English program uses a unique integrated skills approach with a focus on all aspects of the English language including: speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and idioms. After completing General English, a student will naturally progress into our English for Academic Purposes program.

Duration

  • Each term of General English is 8 weeks long

  • Students may study for as many terms as required to pass the course

  • The minimum course length needed to pass one level is 4 weeks (i.e. students cannot pass if they join past the 4 week point of the course)

Requirements

  • Students will take written and oral placement tests on the first day to determine their English level.

  • Students tested at the Beginner level will be placed in General English first and then progress into English for Academic Purposes courses.

  • Students tested at low Intermediate and above will be immediately placed into one of the five levels of EAP courses.

General English Program (GEP), $325/week,25 hours per week.

English for Academic Purposes Program

Description

  • Prepares students to study part-time at a Canadian university or college.

  • For students who are conditionally accepted by our partner institutions and would like to develop significant fluency and written English skills.

  • Students will learn how to:
    • Write university essays and respond to short answer questions

    • Recognize and avoid plagiarism

    • Take notes from lectures and participate in seminars and tutorials

    • Apply strategies for teamwork in an academic environment

    • Think critically and make strong arguments in written and speaking English

    • Research, prepare and deliver presentations

    • Understand and apply strategies for time management and test taking skills

  • This program qualifies students to study part-time at one of ALCC's partner universities or colleges while taking the University Bridging Program from ALCC

  • Beginner students will start in General English and proceed to English for Academic Purposes courses at low intermediate level and then continue into the University Bridging Program

Duration

  • Each term of the English for Academic Purposes program is 8 weeks long

  • The minimum course length needed to pass one level is 4 weeks (i.e. students cannot pass if they join later than the 4 week point of the course)

  • Students may study up to a maximum of three terms to pass a level, unless special circumstances warrant an extension

Requirements

  • Students will take written and oral tests on the first day to determine their English level

  • New students will be placed into the English for Academic Purposes program at the tested level and then continue into the University Bridging Program

  • Students tested at an advanced level or with an official IELTS score of 5.5, TOEFL score of 70 (or equivalent) and higher may qualify to enter the University Bridging Program immediately

Course Fee

English for Academic Purposes (EAP), $325/week,25 hours per week.

University Bridging Program

Description

  • Prepares students to study full-time and succeed at a Canadian university or college

  • For students who are taking one credit course from our partner institutions and would like to develop sophisticated fluency and written English skills

  • Students will learn how to
    • Research, organize and write university research papers

    • Take notes from lectures and participate in seminars and tutorials

    • Adapt to university culture and meet academic expectations

    • Use strategies for teamwork in an academic environment

    • Think critically and make strong arguments in written and speaking English

    • Research, prepare and deliver a presentation

    • Understand and apply strategies for time management and studying at a university level

  • This program qualifies students to enter ALCC's partner universities or colleges full-time without taking the TOEFL / IELTS exam

Duration

  • The complete University Bridging Program is 13 weeks

  • Students may study up to a maximum of two times to pass the UBP, unless special circumstances warrant an extension

Requirements

  • Beginner students will start in General English and continue into English for Academic Purposes program and then University Bridging Program

  • Students successfully completing the English for Academic Purposes Program will naturally progress into the University Bridging Program without TOEFL/IELTS

  • Students tested at an advanced level or with an official IELTS score of 5.5, TOEFL score of 70 (or equivalent) and higher may qualify to enter the University Bridging Program immediately

  • Students successfully completing the University Bridging Program will be permitted to study full-time at our partner Universities without TOEFL/IELTS

Other Courses and Fees

English for Professionals Program (EFP)

English for Professionals is a practical program that focuses on communication skills needed for functionality in the professional world. The program targets the fundamental skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening in the context of professional situations. It emphasizes communication skills needed for interacting with colleagues, presenting information, and negotiating and resolving problems in a professional environment. The course is organized into independent weekly units that target specific functional tasks to meet the scheduling needs of our students. In addition to the focused skills training, students will have a chance to observe various professional environments in the Halifax area to improve their greater understanding of professional cultures in North America.

Course Fee

$200/week, 15 hours per week

Speak UP!

This program is designed to give participants the opportunity to develop confidence and fluency in speaking English. It focuses on pronunciation, natural English fluency practice, use of correct language forms in a variety of situations, presentation skills, and listening and speaking skills. If you have already achieved an intermediate to advanced level of English in reading and writing and want to practice speaking, reduce your accent, perfect your pronunciation and develop a native-like fluency, this is the program for you.

Course Fee

$200/week, 15 hours per week (minimum registration 4 weeks)

Corporate Training and other Tailor Made Programs

Courses and programs can be tailored to meet the needs of any corporation or a group of learners. If your organization has specific needs for training employees in English, our team of professionals will work with you to design a course focused on the areas you wish to concentrate on. Our customized corporate training programs will help organizations develop a work force with better communication skills in English and a greater understanding of professional cultures in North America.

English Test Preparation Program(ETP)

Our test preparation course works to polish the four primary language skills and enhance test taking skills. The candidates will study and review test preparation material on a daily basis. This will help them develop a precise idea about what to expect when they sit for the test. The program is structured to address and practice one particular language skill each day and all four skills are covered in one week, allowing learners to start the program every Monday and study until their test date. If you have an upper intermediate level of English and want to achieve a high score in TOEFL or IELTS, this is the program for you.

$325/week, 20 hours per week(minimum registration 4 weeks)

Courses and programs can be tailored to the needs of particular individuals. If you need assistance to address any specific area of concern in English, our professional instructors will work with you one-on-one and will design a course focused on the areas you wish to concentrate on.
