English for Academic Purposes Program

Description
  • Prepares students to study part-time at a Canadian university or college
  • For students who are conditionally accepted by our partner institutions and would like to develop significant fluency and written English skills
  • Students will learn how to:
    • Write university essays and respond to short answer questions
    • Recognize and avoid plagiarism
    • Take notes from lectures and participate in seminars and tutorials
    • Apply strategies for teamwork in an academic environment
    • Think critically and make strong arguments
    • Research, prepare and perform presentations
    • Understand and apply strategies for time management and test taking
  • Program qualifies student to study part-time at one of ALCC’s partner universities or colleges while taking the university bridging program from ALCC
  • $300 scholarship to university or college credit course awarded to students who achieve an A grade (85% and above) in level 5
  • Beginner students will start in General English and proceed to English for Academic Purposes courses at low intermediate level and then continue into the University Bridging Program
Duration
  • Each term of the English for Academic Purposes program is 8 weeks long
  • The minimum course length needed to pass one level is 4 weeks (e.g. students cannot pass if they join later than the 4 week point of the course)
  • The complete English for Academic Purposes program is in 5 levels and can be finished within 10 months
  • Students may study up to a maximum of three terms to pass a level, unless special circumstances warrant an extension
Requirements
  • Students will take written and oral tests on the first day to determine English level
  • New students will be placed into the English for Academic Purposes program at the tested level and then continue into the University Bridging Program
  • Students tested at an advanced level or with an official IELTS score of 5.5, TOEFL score of 70 (or equivalent) and higher may qualify to enter the University Bridging Program immediately
