Study Groups

The study groups are designed to give learners alternative options to language learning. The focus is on improving the speaking skills of learners through casual English conversation.

These groups were created after listening to learners and responding to a desire for smaller class sizes, interesting, relevant topics and opportunities to use English in real-life situations.

Learners can choose and benefit from the following study groups:
Friends Group

This is a small study group for intermediate level learners. The goal of this group is to improve listening and speaking skills through viewing episodes of Friends and engaging in group discussion about the show’s theme. The is a great group for people who are interested in slang expressions and who wish to explore the details of North American popular culture.

Discussion Group

This is a small study group for intermediate to upper-intermediate level learners. The goal of this group is to improve vocabulary, comprehension and pronunciation through reading and discussion. In each session learners are given a newspaper article taken from a Canadian newspaper. Each group member will read a section of the article aloud and have an opportunity to express their opinion about the topic, ask questions and to tell relevant personal stories. The atmosphere of this group is casual, engaging and fun.

Presentation Group

This is a small study group for intermediate level learners. The goal of this group is to improve speaking and listening skills. Over the duration of the course each student has an opportunity to demonstrate something they are good at. For example: origami, tea ceremony, playing a musical instrument etc. Topics for this group are always chosen by the students themselves and this often leads to a cultural exchange because learners bring subjects from their native countries. The objective is to teach each other something new and to have fun while doing it!
