March In Review

3rd Annual Ramadan Iftar
During Ramadan, those who celebrate fast everyday from dawn to sunset, for approximately one month. This year, Ramadan took place between mid-February and mid-March, during which ALCC celebrated the holiday by hosting our annual communal iftar! ALCC staff, students, and community members got together to share in a delicious meal, intriguing crafts, and a fun round of Ramadan trivia. Our iftar has been one of our most popular community events, and we’re always thrilled for the turnout!

Watercolour Painting
We were so grateful to have our favourite local artist, Helen, return once again to teach our students about the fulfilling art of watercolour painting. With over twenty years of experience, there’s no better person for the job! ALCC students and teachers painted their own handmade cards with floral designs, perfect to gift to friends or family anytime this spring season. Although this painting style was popularized during the Renaissance era, it dates back as far as early cave paintings!

Museum of Natural History
The Museum of Natural History is rich with information about Nova Scotia wildlife, history, and culture. This month, ALCC students enjoyed learning about the life and habitats of various animals found throughout Nova Scotia, our province’s geographical history, and the newly established exhibit about Mi’kmaq life, history, and culture. And, of course, we couldn’t leave without saying hello to Gus the gopher tortoise, the museum’s more than 100-year-old living mascot!

Easter Egg Painting
What holiday includes bunnies and coloured eggs? If you guessed Easter, you’re correct! Painting eggs is an ancient tradition that originally held religious meaning, but today many households do it just for fun! Traditionally, real eggs are hollowed out and painted for this activity, but at ALCC, we decided to use cardboard eggs instead to avoid the smell, and because they last longer!
